Playing Dirty: Operation Trouser Snake

Sci-fi Books for Christmas. RAINHILL author Andrew Williams is returning to the world of politics and power.
The 70-something writer and former chartered surveyor has stuck almost entirely to pure sci-fi since the publication of debut novel Arcadia’s Children: Samantha’s Revenge back in 2017.
But he admits that writing new novel Playing Dirty, which tells the story of power-hungry politicians Michael Ventiquatro and Arthur Epistrone’s plan to seize control of Parliament by all and any means necessary, was “just brilliant fun”.
Williams said: “Both Ventiquatro, and Arthur Epistrone, Ventiquatro’s loyal subordinate, are nasty pieces of work, but I loved writing about them!
“I had an absolutely brilliant time writing Playing Dirty, because it was the continuation of the sci-fi political plot I’d started with [last year’s novel] Superior. I’ve always wanted to write about really nasty, really ruthless politicians who are absolutely hellbent on absolute power!”
After orchestrating a nerve gas attack on Parliament to kill off as many MPs as he can, Arthur Epistrone uses the oldest but possibly most effective trick in the book – sex and scandal.
He brings in the beautiful and ruthless Honey Pursamon to lure MPs into bed, take incriminating photographs, and blackmail them with the results.
Williams added: “I couldn’t resist giving it the code name Operation: Trouser Snake and then that seemed to work perfectly as the subtitle of the book itself.
“One or two people have asked me if Michael Ventiquatro and Arthur Epistrone are based on anyone in particular, but all I’m prepared to say on that is that there have been 17 Prime Ministers in my lifetime, goodness only knows how many MPs and more sex scandals and discredited politicians than you can shake a stick at so I haven’t been short on inspiration!”
Playing Dirty is Williams’ ninth novel. Since the publication of Samantha’s Revenge, there have been four more in the Arcadia’s Children series, including a prequel, Marooned, and the series of sci-fi thrillers has earned Williams critical plaudits and a small army of devoted fans.
He insists, though, that despite taking an unexpected left turn with Playing Dirty, he has no intention of turning his back on pure sci-fi. He added: “Since retiring last year I have plenty of time on my hands so I can’t imagine stopping writing any time soon. I enjoy it too much!”
