What is cyberpunk?
I asked a friend for his take on my writing Genre, my Unique selling point. (USP) and he came back with your genre is a thrilling mixture of Military Sci-Fi with Biopunk and Cyberpunk elements.
That’s clear isn’t it? I was unsure so as a consequence I decided to do some research. os Science Fiction Sub-Genre. But first, let’s define science fiction novels. Science Fiction (Sci-Fi)
Science Fiction (Sci-Fi) is based on imagined future scientific or technological advances and major social or environmental changes. Sci-Fi frequently portrays space or time travel and life on other planets (eg Dr Who)
Sci-fi has become subdivided into separate sub genre
What is Hard Science Fiction?
In this form, technology takes centre stage in the story. Scientific concepts are explained in great detail and can sometimes affect character development and plot.
What is Soft Science Fiction?
Technology and facts aren’t as prevalent and there is more focus on the why and less on the how.
What is Dystopian Fiction?
Dystopian sci-fi has a primary focus on political repression where society’s freedoms are restricted. ( eg George Orwell’s 1984.)
What is Military Science Fiction?
Military Sci-Fi has a story that revolves around war or a military conflict. The characters are involved in risk-taking, duty, honour and heroism.
What is Cyberpunk
Cyberpunk is a subgenre of Sci-Fi in a dystopian futuristic setting that tends to focus on a combination of lowlife and high tech.
What is Biopunk?
Science fiction focuses on biotechnology.
What is Steampunk?
Steampunk sci-fi blends the future technology and the design and aesthetic of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
What is Space Opera?
A space opera will usually be a long-running series with a continuing story. It is set in space and will have several characters recurring throughout the series.
What is Apocalyptic Science Fiction?
(Also alien invasion)
This branch of sci-fi envisages a cataclysmic event and the heroes fighting back (eg Day of the Triffids or War of The Worlds )
What are Parallel Worlds?
This branch of sci-fi has the concept of parallel worlds, There are an infinite number of alternate worlds with identical people living very different lives. (eg Worlds of the Imperium)
